Gulf NewsDubai Dozens of private sector companies were honoured yesterday at the Business Excellence Awards in Dubai.

The ceremony, which was held by the Department of Economic Development (DED), saw three companies receive the Dubai Quality Award and 15 winners of the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme.

The Dubai Quality Award was introduced in 1994 by Dubai’s Department of Economic Development as a means of boosting business standards in the city.

Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Free Zone and Al Fara’a General Contracting Company were the winners of the Dubai Quality Award, the highest accolade on offer.

“Quality and Excellence will continue to be the strong focal areas for the Department of Economic Development,” said Sami Al Qamzi, director general of the DED.

Excellence in Dubai

“The winners of the Business Excellence Awards have proved to us that excellence is indeed a part of their DNA. Their success has inspired more businesses to come forward and thus add to the overall excellence that one associated with Dubai today,” he added.

More than 4,000 organisations have registered and trained for the Business Excellence Award with the number of interested applicants nearly doubling since 2010.

“The Dubai Quality Award augments the trust that our customers have on the Lulu brand and it is really heartening to receive an appreciation of such high order,” said Yousuf Ali, managing director of Emke Group, which runs LuLu Hypermarkets; one of the winners of the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme.

“The secret of winning is our focus on sustainable excellence based on international quality products and excellent service across all our stores. We will continue our forward march in setting new retailing benchmarks while expanding our presence in new markets,” Ali added.

Each submission of the Dubai Quality Award was reviewed by assessors according to procedures laid down by the Business Excellence Centre at DED.

“Today, we celebrate three wins in two years for the Al Fara’a Integrated Construction Group and we are humbled by the continued commitment and motivation of our people to be adjudged leaders in excellence,” said Dr J.R. Gangaramani, president and executive chairman of the Al Fara’a Group.

Transparency

Shahul Hameed, executive director and general manager of Bahri and Mazroei Technical Systems (BMTS) said it was easy to set up a business in the UAE and that the processes in place were fairly transparent.

“We have not experienced any major issues with red tape or bureaucracy during our seven years of operation in this country. The whole team is very proud at winning this award but our journey is starting and we need to keep performing to the high standard we have set ourselves,” Hameed said.

The DED launched the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme to raise the standards of customer service and business ethics in the country’s fast-expanding retail sector.

Another of yesterday’s winners was asset management group wasl. Its CEO, Hesham Abdullah Al Qassim, said: “wasl is an equal-opportunity employer and we are proud of our open, transparent, collaborative style of management.

“Our key achievements have been our good corporate governance and our well-managed integration of government entities,” he added.
