Jerash -- His Royal Highness Prince Faisal Ibn Al Hussein on Saturday led a tree-planting ceremony near Jerash organised by the Ministry of Agriculture to mark Arbor Day.

Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II, Prince Faisal joined the ceremony at a designated forest near the village of Balila where more than 200 donums will be planted with trees as a first phase.

A total of 5,000 donums will be forested over the next five years.

Minister of Agriculture Said Al Masri said that his ministry had distributed 1.

5 million saplings to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, the Jordan Armed Forces, the Greater Amman Municipality and other state institutions to be planted in various areas of the kingdom.

3 million donums," Masri told the ceremony held in cooperation with the Jordan University of Science and technology JUST, Tree Society and the "We Are All Jordan Commission".

Tree-planting in forests is a ministry priority as it hands out saplings to various departments for forestation and arboriculture as a total of 2,700 kilometres of roads had trees planted on their side in addition to a tree plantation project along the Amman-Aqaba highway.

JUST President Wajih Oweis said the university, which had a vast expertise in serving national projects, had maintained close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and prepared the celebration site where 2,500 trees will be planted.

National Campaign for Forestation Coordinator, Mohammad Asfour, spoke of the importance of tree plantation and said his organisation is working to increase the green cover and fight desertification.
