Iran has launched the Middle East's first MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) production plant in the country's southwestern Khuzestan province.
The petrochemical project, with an annual output capacity of 20,000 tons, went on stream on Monday in Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in a ceremony attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Press TV reported.
Ahmadinejad also inaugurated a gas condensate separation unit and Gotvand-e Olya Dam and power plant in the province on Monday.
The plant is capable of producing 2.7 million tons of products such as ethane, propane and butane.
The products will be used as feedstock for petrochemical units at Imam Khomeini Petrochemical Complex.
Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical products over the past few years.
Its National Petrochemical Company is currently the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.
Iran has exported petrochemical products to more than 60 countries. The main destinations include the Far East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa.
On Sunday, National Petrochemical Company (NIPC) said 41 million tons of petrochemicals were produced by domestic petrochemical complexes in the last Iranian year. About $11,200 billion worth of petrochemicals, amounting to 15.8 million tons, were exported last year.
