Karachi: The top police officials Sunday renewed their commitment to continue their operation against criminal and outlaws unflinchingly despite the persistent loss of their lives of their colleagues.
The renewed pledge came after the meeting of the senior command of the police under Shahid Hayat, the additional inspector general of police. All the deputy inspector generals (DIGs) participated in the meeting.
“No matter what, Karachi Operation shall go on and police would not go back from its stand of fighting against criminal elements trying to destroy peace,” a police statement said.
The meeting was convened after deadly attacks on the police patrols in Landhi town overnight in which six police officials were killed in a grenade and gunfire attacks.
The six policemen, including three assistance sub-inspectors (ASIs) were among 17 people, killed in different incidents of killings on Saturday.
Since the turning of the new year as many as 17 policemen were gunned down or killed in this restive city. That included killing of famed police officer Chaudhry Mohamad Aslam, who was killed in a huge suicide bomb attack.
“Recent killings of police personnel cannot stop us from doing our job [and] operation shall continue,” the police statement said.
Frequent killings of police began after government decided to launch operation against the reckless genocide in the city on political, sectarian, ethnic and criminal basis that reached at their peak in September last.
The police said that this was not the first time when Karachi police was being targeted. There were attacks on police stations and even the corp commander of Karachi was attacked. Besides the police, prominent scholars, leaders and philanthropists were also killed but the Karachi police brought peace back into the city, it said.
Funeral prayers of the slain police officers were offered at the police headquarters. Two million rewards were announced for the bereaved families whereas jobs would also be given to the scions.
The police chief also announced a reward of five million rupees for those who provide lead to the arrest of the killers of the policemen.
Police raided at different location in Landhi and Qayyumabad neighbourhood, where the attacks were carried in recent days, and arrested at least 32 suspects and recovered weapons from two of them.
Paramilitary rangers also cracked down on the hideouts of the banned groups in the eastern district and arrested over a dozen suspects beside recovering weapons including hand grenade.
The government has decided to invoke ban on pillion riding as attacks on the motorcycle remained unstoppable. The ban would be effective from Monday and would last for at least one month.
