MUSCAT - The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) on Tuesday floated a tender for project management consultancy (PMC) services to 'design, build and operate' the Diba-Lima-Khasab road project (section 2) in the Musandam governorate.

According to information on the Tender Board website, the documents for the PMC tender will be distributed until June 19, 2014, with the last date for submission being July 7, 2014.

An international tender for pre-qualification for the construction work of the Diba-Lima-Khasab road project (section 2) was opened in August last year. The Tender Board's website showed that 33 construction and engineering companies, mostly international, are looking to pre-qualify for the project.

The Diba-Lima-Khasab road project is a strategically important carriageway in the Musandam governorate that cuts through extremely rugged terrain.

The project comprises a 65km-long coastal road, starting from Al Khalidiya in the wilayat of Khasab to Diba, passing through the village of Lima.

Section 2 is an extension of the first stage, which is 21km long, and starts from the centre of Khasab to Al Khalidiya village, where the road course has been modified by constructing a number of road tunnels and bridges with the aim of reducing curves and radiuses.

The Diba-Lima-Khasab road project comprises seven tunnels to avoid high slopes and 18 bridges across valleys with a cross-section consisting of two lanes with asphalt shoulders of 2.5m width on each side.

The project is considered to be one of the strategic linking roads in Oman that will stimulate trade and facilitate the flow of traffic between the wilayats of the Musandam governorate and contribute to revitalising tourism in the governorate.
