Muscat: Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Manthri, chairman of the State Council, opened the three-day Omani Traditional Poetry Symposium 'Identity and Aspiration' organised by Sultan Qaboos Center for Islamic Culture, yesterday.

The symposium sheds light on significant issues related to Omani folk poetry such as discussing the origins and characteristics of the Omani folk poetry as a popular and valuable art in the Sultanate.
It will also reflect on the past, present and future status of this traditional art. This event will give the Omani poets a chance to communicate with poets and experts from other countries to share experiences in the field of poetry.

20 working papers

The symposium will discuss the essence of the Omani traditional poetry and its origins. At the symposium, more than 20 working papers will be presented by experts in poetry from Oman and other regional countries.

The papers will discuss the origins and roots of the Omani traditional poetry, the social component of Omani traditional poetry, the music of the Omani poetry, the contemporary Omani poetry and its trends and effects, the documentation and study of Omani poetry and the horizons and aspirations of Omani poetry.

On the first day, researchers Saidah bint Khatir Al Farisiyah, Mohammed bin Salim Al Ghailani and Ali bin Salim bin Saif Al Harthy presented working papers on various topics in the Omani traditional poetry.

"The symposium comes in response to the Royal Orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in a bid to identify the roots of the Omani traditional poetry's origins, features, characteristics, past, current and future," said Habib bin Mohammed Al Riyami, secretary-general of Sultan Qaboos Centre for Islamic Culture and General Supervisor of the symposium.

The symposium aims at coming up with objective recommendations that serve be translated into a long-term work plan that there the Omani traditional poetry in particular and enrich the traditional poetry in general.

The opening ceremony included a presentation of a poem by an Omani poet.

The chairman of the State Council opened an exhibition, which showcases a number of publications and poetry books on the Omani traditional poetry.

"It is very important to study the traditional Omani poetry and develop it in a scientific and academic way," he said.

"The symposium would come up with recommendations that enrich the Omani traditional poetry in particular and Arab traditional poetry in general," he added.

At the first session, the origins and roots of Omani traditional poetry were discussed. Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, undersecretary of the Heritage and Culture Ministry for Culture, chaired the session. More than 120 participants, including academicians, researchers and experts are attending the event.
