MUSCAT -- The Oman Society of Contractors (OSC) has decided to form a three-member committee to address issues regarding registration and classification as also the issue of competition from International bidders.

The decision was taken at the second meeting of the newly-elected Board of Directors of the OSC held recently at the Galfar premises headed by Dr P Mohammed Ali, Chairman, Board of Directors.

Talking to the Observer Salim Talib al Sheedi, CEO of Oman Society of Contractors said the committee would be assigned the job of pursuing the OSC's proposal on registration with competent authorities in the government and administration. Besides this, the committee would look into the clarity on the definition of 'International Companies' including restrictions for their participation in Omani market.

The committee will also discuss nature of international projects and classification of international competititors as also the establishment of principle of price preference of local contractors, said Salim.

Procedure for ensuring that certain part of the project is offloaded to local contractors and issue of registration of international contractors in excellent grade also comes under the purview of the newly formed committee.

The three-member committee comprising Simon Karam, Mashoor al Asfoorr and Zahi Saba, will also look into establishment of guidelines and parameters for international contractors for entering into competition.

The OSC, according to Salim, also discussed employment issues. It decided to take the labour unions into confidence to maintain consistency in manpower management and address the Omanisation issue. For this the members discussed the manpower practices in other GCC countries and tried to reach over a reasonable solution respecting the needs of both the employees and employers.

Apart from the board chairman and members of registration committee those who attended the Board of Directors' meeting included, C K Khanna, Yusuf Nalwala Nabil Nakhile, Maqbool Ali, a representative of Shyam Sundar and Salim Talib al Sheedi.

The OSC Board of Directors also discussed the issue of increasing the number of members of the OSC. For this the CEO of the Society has been entrusted with the task of preparing a plan and act accordingly. The members proposed that there should be a revision of fee for the members. The CEO will review this and present the case to the members in the next meeting.

The chairman indicated that list of contractors registered with the Tender Board has been obtained and can be made available if required and said that effort should be made to collect such list from various government bodies and the contractors should be requested to join the Society.
