MUSCAT -- Oman Refineries and Petrochemicals Company LLC's (ORPC) newly-built Sohar Refinery has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001: 2008 certification in yet recognition of the project's world-scale credentials. Masoud al Msalmy, ORPC's General Manager (Corporate Support), received the award on behalf of ORPC Chief Executive Officer Dr Adil Abdulaziz al Kindy, at a special ceremony organised at the Sohar Refinery Complex on Tuesday and attended by senior management officials. The certification was presented by Ramachandran, Country Manager of TUV NORD, an international certification agency operating in more than 70 countries and specialised in management system certifications.

The ISO 9001 is a quality management standard that helps both product and service organisations achieve standards of quality that are recognised and respected throughout the world. "This is a great achievement for the ORPC. By gaining this certification we have once again proved that the ORPC is committed to quality and continually upgrade systems in Sohar Refinery in a manner that would contribute to improvement and stability of its performance," commented Dr Adil al Kindy, Chief Executive Officer of ORPC.

In remarks at the ceremony, Al Msalmy hailed the certification as another milestone in ORPC's quest for business excellence. Hard work and commitment by the entire ORPC team contributed to the achievement of the certification, the General Manager noted, as he exhorted the staff to raise the bar in improving standards and practices. Sohar Refinery was built with state-of-the-art technology to process the feedstock of long residue that is produced at Mina Al Fahal (MAF) Refinery and blended with crude oil. The ORPC's Mina Al Fahal Refinery already holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.

ORPC has a dedicated team led by the Quality and Business Improvement Department which is continuing its work towards certification of the refinery to other prestigious international standards in the field of environment, health, safety and information security similar to what was achieved in MAF Refinery earlier, based on an approved time-bound programme envisaged as part of the Corporate Strategic Business Plan. This achievement has coincided with the tremendous improvement in Sohar Refinery's operational availability (OA) which has improved 162 % since 2007 due to the strenuous efforts exerted in resolving the technical difficulties encountered by the refinery in the past.
