MUSCAT — The Omanisation level at National Rice Mills (NRM), one of the leading rice companies in Oman, has touched 55 per cent with some of its young Omani employees now shouldering higher responsibilities.

“The company has been very keen to support young Omani employees who have improved their performance over the years,” Pawan Malhotra, chief executive officer of NRM said, adding, “in this company we are absolutely very proud of young Omanis who have shouldered higher responsibilities, and that is through hard work. I am willing to support any Omani who shows motivation.”

NRM produces quality rice brands like Thamer, Al Ahli, and the recently launched Shifaf.

Five young Omani employees in the company started their career in the company as loaders and today they are holding high positions. They believe that their motivation and interest to learn was what made them successful.

Yousuf Abdullah Al Kharbooshi, head of quality and administration, said that he started the job in 1997 as a labourer then he was promoted to the warehouse and loading unit. Abdullah, being a person with positive thinking, was assigned laboratory jobs as the assistant to the supervisor. “I was very keen to work hard to support the company. I proved my mettle and now I am ranked as the head of quality administration at the company. Working in the private sector is not easy. One should have commitment and an interest to prove his merits,” said Yosuf.

His way to success was also through different training programmes in India and Pakistan on rice quality. The training was sponsored by the company itself, which took him to higher level. In fact, he is the only Omani national in the company who is an expert in rice analysis, sorting, and identifying the quality of Indian, Pakistani, Thai, and Egyptian rice.

Suhail Al Rusheidi, started his career as a receptionist. Later he was given higher responsibilities in administration and quality management. He has been through different training courses and learning, which he believes, put him in better position. With the experience gained by him, he was capable to purely work as a public relation officer where he handles jobs associated with immigration, submission of visas, applications renewal, cancellations, labour card, etc.

Suhail said: “Working in the public relations is very interesting because you meet a lot of people. Reaching higher position needs willingness to learn and work hard. My challenges at work is what made me ambitious and successful.”

Badr Al Hasani started his career in 1998 as a loader in warehouse. “Because I had shown desire to develop a career, I was sent to the accounts department as accounts trainee with three months probation and within a short period I was accepted as an accountant supervisor dealing with suppliers,” he said.

Abdullah Al Siyabi, who is currently working in the company as production supervisor said: “The most important thing about working in the private sector is to have self-confidence to improve oneself and willingness to work hard.”

“The personal attitude of Omanis has improved a lot specially in terms of taking higher responsibilities and I am very much willing to help the Omanis. Feedback is also important in the company to evaluate the performance of each labour an employer,” added Malhotra.

National Rice Mills was established in 1996. Since its establishment, it has taken giant strides towards prosperity. NRM is located at Rusayl industrial area and has endeavoured to deliver the finest quality of basmati rice with the help of its competent and highly motivated employees, who are constantly upgrading their knowledge base and techniques to keep pace with changing global scenario.
