MUSCAT -- The Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (PAIPED) will lead a delegation of Omani marble producers at the 48th International Trade Fair for Stone Design and Technology in Verona, Italy, from September 25 to 28. Known as Marmomacc, the exhibition is considered the leading event in the marble industry and one of the largest commercial expos in Europe. PAIPED has identified the event as an essential component in expanding Oman's stone and marble export capacity. Last year's exhibition attracted over 28,000 visitors from 132 countries and featured 1,518 exhibitors representing businesses in 61 countries.
This year, the Oman Pavilion will cover an area of 174.5 square metres and showcase the capabilities of nine Omani companies to the world. Six businesses exhibited in 2012, attracting 784 interested buyers and resulted in several new agreements being signed, and increased interest is anticipated this year. Nasima al Balushi, PAIPED's Director-General of Export Development, said, "In line with PAIPED's mandate to boost Oman's non-oil exports and diversify the national export basket, we look to create new openings for stone manufacturers and suppliers. Marmomacc is an exciting chance to meet buyers and potential new customers from around the world. It is imperative that we maximise the opportunities and build on the growing prominence of Omani exporters, developed over the past four years of exhibiting. This year represents the largest Omani delegation to date and we are confident that Oman will have great presence at the exhibition."
In 2012, Oman's total export of marble and travertine, crude or roughly trimmed was valued at $24.21 million with overseas shipments all increasing. Over $8 million of marble was exported to India, the Sultanate's main trading partner, while Omani companies also export to regional neighbours Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as well as the Far East, including China and Singapore.
