MUSCAT -- Engineering and contracting giant Galfar Engineering & Contracting LLC has bagged the prestigious Southern Expressway road proejct from the Muscat Municipality. The 53.16km expressway will link Qurum roundabout and Al Naseem roundabout. The period of construction is 51 months.
The project will have 39 structures comprising bridges and bypasses, and the longest bridge will come up at Al Khoud. The world-class Southern Expressway project will be one of the most significant road projects in the Muscat governorate.
As of today, the total value of projects being executed by Galfar in Oman exceeds $1.4 billion. One of the greatest contributions of Galfar to the Sultanate is its highly successful Omanisation drive.
"We are committed to Omanisation, and it's our priority. With over 2,200 nationals, we have initiated several successful training programmes, within the country and abroad. "The Omani workforce of Galfar is efficient and appropriately trained, because of which Galfar has carved out for itself a niche in the Omani business community," a company official told Times Business.
Galfar Engineering & Contracting has a strong workforce of 13,000. Other than Oman, it is also active in Brunei Darussalam, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Galfar is just completing the four-year design, civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation service contracts ($217 million) of Petroleum Development Oman. In addition, the company is carrying out several lumpsum EPC and non-EPC contracts of PDO.
Galfar has just commenced the new five-year (with an option for a two-year extension) off-plot delivery contract in PDO's north and central Oman oil and gas fields valued at $340 million. The consortium of Snamporgetti (Italy), Bechtel (US) and Galfar had completed in 2000 the $370 million LNG upstream central processing unit, managed by PDO.
The ongoing projects also include the $57 million corporate headquarters building of the Saud Bahwan Group, the $12.6 million Mawellah Interchange of the Muscat Municipality, and the $81.5 million Al Ansab STP of the Oman Wastewater Company.
Other projects undertaken include several major hospitals, a number of prestigious projects for the palace office (Diwan) and regional municipalities, including the electro-mechanical and airconditioning works of a high-profile royal guest palace in Barkha, three major fishing harbours, two large stadium complexes and several power and water distribution and sewerage-related projects. They include a major sewerage network project costing $100 million in Salalah and a $57 million drinking water project in the Sharqiyah region.
