MUSCAT, July 5 (KUNA) -- Oman has expanded Port Khasab with a cost of 17 million Omani Riyals, about USD 45 million, in an effort to boost trade with Iran, the port's chairman Mohammed Al-Shehhi said in a press statement Wednesday.

The expansion project includes an Iranian trade area with three floating platforms, he said.

The project is divided into three sections for fishing service, local and foreign trade services and tourism services, he added.

Trade from Iran hiked from 4,000 tons to 50,000 tons a year and the expansion will have the capacity to receive big boats.

The port receives about 5,000 boats a month from Iran in addition to about 15 commercial ships from the UAE and Iran.
