MUSCAT-- A career counselling seminar for careers in information technology was held yesterday at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Al Khuwair. The event was sponsored and organised by the Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech).

"For many students the choice of a future career seems a daunting task. It is therefore important that they are provided first-hand information about employment opportunities in fields like information technology. Besides, we want to present successful role models, in order to encourage our future students," said Dr Barbara Stauble, project adviser of OGTech.

The public seminar was headed by IT expert, Professor Dr Otto Spaniol, who has taught at RWTH Aachen University (Germany) for over 35 years. He is the author of many IT publications about wireless systems and mobility in the next generation internet.

Other speakers included Tariq Al Barwani, IT manager for Nawras and popular IT expert; Ali Al Lawati, manager of Technology and Security Risk Services for Ernst & Young; Azher Hussain, technical account manager for Microsoft, and Hassan Abdul Ali Mohammed, deputy general manager, head of IT, Oman Arab Bank.

"For many consecutive years, applied information technology has been one of the most popular programmes at RWTH Aachen University. Over the last decade it has consistently been ranked among the top three study programmes in Germany. Many graduates have gained leading positions in business and research," said Stauble. A Bachelor of Science Programme in Applied Information Technology is now offered at the Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech).

The duration of the bachelor programme is four years. During the first two years studies focus on the fundamentals of practical and technical computer science, as well as the basics of economics and business decision-making. In the following years, students will develop skills to understand some important areas of computing, such as data and communication management or software. Each course is accompanied by practical exercises or case studies. "One of our aims is to promote applied research in cooperation with the local and international industry," said Professor Christoph Hilgers, project manager of OGTech.

OGTech is a private university, affiliated to RWTH Aachen University, one of Germany's most prestigious universities of technology. OGTech will start its pre-university programme in September 2007 at its campus in Azaiba. Depending on their English skills, students will either have to pass an Intensive English Programme or be able to enrol directly into the Foundation Year.

In 2008 OGTech will offer Bachelor of Science studies in Applied Geosciences, Applied IT, Regional Management and Tourism, and Urban Planning and Architectural Design. For more information contact Sousann Al Heureithi on 92280590.
