Abu Dhabi Changing the colour of asphalt, implementing speed control tapes on the roads and installing panels indicating new maximum speed limits are all part of an initiative to control speed on roads across Abu Dhabi, officials said yesterday.

The new policy, to ensure smooth traffic flow and improved traffic safety standards, will be completed by this year, according to a spokesman from the Department of Transport.

The initiative is implemented by the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate.

The programme will seek to control speeds on main roads using four strategies:

Measures

The first will be the implementation of systems to notify and alert drivers of the reduction of speed limits on main roads, such as changing the colour of the asphalt, implementing speed control tapes and installing panels indicating new maximum speed limits.

This will be implemented in five areas across Abu Dhabi city and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The second will invlove changing the numerals on speed limit signs from Arabic to English only. This will increase the visibility of speed limit signs to all drivers.

The new panels, placed every 5km instead of the current 10km, will remind drivers of the speed limit. This initiative has already begun and is expected to be replicated on all main roads in Abu Dhabi in the next two months.

The third will be the installation of panels indicating the different speed limits on different sections of the same road.

This initiative was recommended by Abu Dhabi Police and will be implemented on all main roads in the city within the next few months.

Police will enforce the implementation of and adherence to traffic rules and regulations through continuous police patrolling.
