A major new government health clinic designed to serve an expanding area of Dubai is set to open in a few months.
Satwa Health Centre near Shaikh Zayed Road will offer a string of specialist services, an official at Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) told Gulf News.
The centre is due to open in September just as a new trauma centre at the opposite end of Dubai is scheduled to begin work. Dohms is finishing building work at a trauma centre at Rashid Hospital designed to cope with major medical emergencies.
Saeed Ali Al Shamsi, director of engineering and biomedical services for Dohms, said contractors were likely to hand over Satwa Health Centre during the coming month.
He said the centre was likely to begin welcoming its first patients in the final quarter of this year. Dohms is spending Dh25 million on the new outpatient centre. "Shaikh Zayed Road is expanding and that requires extra health services to be provided. Dohms's strategy is always to look at changes happening and to provide the healthcare required," Al Shamsi said.
The new clinic is located behind the Shangri-La Hotel, which is on Shaikh Zayed Road close to Interchange One.
Currently there is a health clinic near Satwa bus station and the services here will be transferred to the new centre when it opens.
"The land where the clinic is now will be handed over to somebody who can better utilise it," Al Shamsi added.
In a separate development, Al Shamsi revealed the new trauma centre at Rashid Hospital would be fully completed by the end of the year. He said construction was almost finished and would be followed by fitting out with air-conditioning systems and the like.
The centre will have the latest accident and emergency technology alongside fully-equipped operating theatres. Described as the best-equipped accident and emergency centre in the Middle East, the centre will be capable of dealing with emergencies.
The centre will be able to receive six ambulances at once and will have six operating theatres.
As reported in Gulf News, a new government hospital costing Dh300 million will be built close to the trauma centre to replace the existing Rashid Hospital. It is set to open in late 2007.
