Muscat - Work on the new passenger terminal at Duqm Airport is nearing completion and it will open in September, Sheikh Aiman bin Ahmed al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports, said.

Celebrating the fourth anniversary of starting operations on July 23, 2014, Sheikh Hosni said that Duqm Airport is gearing up to start operations from the new passenger terminal. “It is 100 per cent managed by Omanis since starting operations at the temporary airport in July 2014. The airport has achieved the aims for which it was set up. Construction work at the new passenger terminal is nearing completion and will be opened in September 2018,” said Sheikh Hosni.

He said that the airport is a means for connecting Duqm to cities across the world. “It complements the great efforts made by the Special Economic Zone Authority in Duqm to put the zone on the world economic map and leverage its strategic location. The runway is designed to receive all types and sizes of aircraft and has a terminal with the capacity to handle 500,000 passengers per annum. It has waiting areas that are on par with other modern airports.”

The airport has received 120,000 passengers from the time it started operations till mid-July this year on the Muscat-Duqm route. Oman Air has operated 3,000 flights - six flights weekly.

The passenger terminal, which stretches over 5,600sq m has two boarding bridges, five check in-out counters and a 4km long and 75m wide runway that can receive the biggest aircraft in the world.

The eight-storey building includes a 37m high air traffic control tower and offices for air observers. The new passenger terminal is equipped with eight baggage check-in systems, five cabins for renting cars and hotel reservation, in addition to airline offices and a VIP lounge.
