CARTHAGE - Army Chief of Staff brigadier general Mohamed Salah Hamdi, who has been appointed on Monday, has officially taken up his post on Tuesday, during a military ceremony held at Carthage palace with attendance of Caretaker President and Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces Moncef Marzouki, Defence Minister Rachid Sabbagh, Lieutenant-General Rachid Ammar and the members of the Higher Armies' Council.
Rachid Ammar handed on to Marzouki the national flag which was handed on in turn to the new Chief of Staff.
President Marzouki addressed the officers, NCOs and soldiers of Tunisia's army to highlight the role of the military institution in deep-rooting the values of the republic and of patriotism.
He also spoke of the allegiance of the army toTunisia alone and its respect for the legitimacy resulting from people's will, far from any politicisation and negotiations, he said.
Marzouki also hailed the 45-year-long efforts of outgoing General Rachid Ammar in the service of the Army.
