DAMASCUS, April 5 (AKnews)
The National Syrian Kurdish Council today denied reports about meeting prominent Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Murad Garaalan in the Qandil mountains on the border triangle between Iraq, Turkey and Iran.
Websites reported that a delegation from the council, which includes parties, youth organizations and independents, headed to the Qandil mountains to meet Garaalan to consolidate the position of the Kurdish parties in Syria.
This was with regards to the fact that the Democratic Union Party did not join the council and is considered as part of the PKK in Syria.
Chairman of the Kurdish council Ahmed Suleiman said the council did not receive any invitation from Garaalan or other members of the PKK to meet in Qandil.
The council refused days ago to convert the majority of Kurdish areas in Syria into a war zone in response to statements made by Garaalan.
Garaalan stated that the PKK will turn all the Kurdish areas in Syria into a battle field if the Turkish army enters Syria, accusing Ankara of preparing for an intervention encouraged by Western powers, especially the US and some European countries.
As for holding the second conference of the Kurdish council, Suleiman said that the council has yet to develop its political vision to put together a political program for a meeting.
The Kurds withdrew late last month from the Friends of Syria conference in Istanbul in protest against the rejection by the Syrian National Council of Kurdish demands.
The Kurds also cited that the conference "supports one side of the opposition - the National Syrian Council - while there are a lot of the Syrian opposition".
Kurds are the second largest group in Syria after Arabs and amount to approximately 2-3 million people, according to unofficial estimates. They have accused the Damascus regime of applying racist policies against them for a number of decades.
The President of the National Syrian Kurdish Council Burhan Ghalyoun sought during the Friends of Syria meeting in Tunisia two months ago to reassure the Kurds in Syria.
He said that Kurds will have a place in the country after President Assad's government is toppled. He promised of decentralization and recognition of Kurdish national identity.
