MUSCAT -- Muscat Private Hospital (MPH) successfully performed its first cardiac surgery (CABG) recently. Performing an open heart surgery at this hospital is a milestone for the private healthcare sector as this is the first time such a complex surgery has been performed in Oman, said the hospital. Gary Dorahy, Hospital Director, says, "Having the infrastructure to perform an open heart surgery means that the hospital has entered a new phase in its development in that the hospital can treat higher acuity patients which will benefit both the government and private sectors."
The Cardiac Surgery Programme at MPH is a comprehensive programme that aims at the surgical correction of all types of cardiac disorders, and offers an extensive range of cardiac services. The many cardiac services provided at MPH range right from coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valves surgery, major blood vessels disease and the surgical correction of congenital heart malformations. Thoracic and lung surgery can also be performed.
The Ministry of Health has inspected the cardiac surgery facilities and approved the programme. The availability of cardiac surgery in the private sector will go hand in hand with the cardiac surgery provided by the Ministry of Health. There has been full support for this initiative from the Ministry of Health and particularly the Royal Hospital and its Director-General throughout its progress. "Our Cardiac Surgery Programme provides full cardiac services to patients in the Sultanate. It helps us meet the needs of those affected in Oman, rather than sending them abroad for treatment.
This results in a reduction of stress for both the patient and their relatives. The goal of MPH has always been to reduce the medical requirement for overseas travel, provide comparable cardiac services to all residents and provide family members an opportunity to participate in the healing process before and after surgery," says Gary. Azhar Ibrahim, the first patient to undergo cardiac surgery says, "I always thought that heart surgery is a very complex and difficult procedure, but the expert doctors at MPH made it easy. During my stay at MPH I was given the best medical care and attention. I had two nurses by my bedside 24/7. This made me feel extremely safe and well cared for. I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who took care of me during my hospital stay."
