MUSCAT: Muscat International Airport was shortlisted in the ninth Routes Asia Airports Marketing Award for the Middle East and India region. This award is the only travel industry award, which rewards excellence in airport marketing to airlines.

According to an official from Oman Airports Management Company, Muscat International Airport was one of the four short listed airports in the Middle East and India category.

The awards were announced and presented at Routes Asia, which is an annual airline and airport networking event, which facilitates and encourages the role of airports in the development of air services through formal and informal meeting and networking opportunities. It is designed for airports to meet with airline planners for the purpose of promoting new routes and increasing flight frequencies.

All types of airlines -- network carriers, low cost carriers, regional operators, cargo and charter airlines -- attend the event.

Routes Asia Airport Marketing Award winners are selected by the airline network planning community. Airlines were invited to vote for their preferred airports regardless of size.

The criteria used for shortlisting the preferred airport for each region include the success in attracting new airlines, increasing flight numbers and effective airport marketing communications.
Muscat International Airport currently handles 27 international airlines and is directly connected with 56 destinations.

As a result of marketing policy adopted by the airport, Mahan Air from Iran started flights in the summer months of 2010 and two new airlines, Fly Dubai and Kenya Airways started permanent flights to Muscat in 2010.
