Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) has organised a high-level meeting with the General Secretariat for Development Planning (GSDP) on population and labour projections in Qatar (2010- 2030).
The meeting, which dealt with the outcome, uses and limitations of the projections, saw the participation of a large number of entities concerned in the country. It was attended by around 70 participants specialising in strategy and planning.
The meeting mainly aimed to arrive at an understanding among the various ministries and government entities involved in the new population and labour projections, as well as their uses and consequences, which would serve as a framework for planning national development.
QSA president Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim al-Thani said population projections were a scientific and technical means to obtain accurate estimates for population-related issues.
This could be in terms of size or other factors such as the information required by planners, policy-makers and decision-makers for different purposes, particularly because Qatar is set to play host to mega events such as the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
He stressed that the issue was key to economic and social development planning, aimed at raising the standard of living for different segments of society.
In the meantime, he said, the population projections were based mainly on the outcome of population censuses and studies on the number of deaths, level of fertility and types of migration prevalent in society.
Sultan al-Kuwari, director of QSA's population and social statistics department and president of the technical team working on the preparation of projections, said the meeting came up with some recommendations.
The entities concerned should have wider participation in the upgrade of the next projections and population projections should be updated every two years under the joint supervision of QSA and GSDP, it was said.
Also, an e-forum for participants of the meeting should be created to ease the exchange of information.
