Sharjah, Aug 14th, 2008 (WAM): Paying homage to the departed soul of the poet of endless hope, Mahmoud Darwish, Sharjah Department of Culture and Information has launched a poetic competition in his name.
The new competition will supplement the annual Arab poetry forum being organised by the Department. Several poets from across the Arab world will participate in the much awaited event. Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish created a new genre of emotional poetry which depicted the pain, sorrow and endless hope of Palestinians living under occupation. Every poem Mahmoud Darwish wrote is a tribute to the Palestinian struggle and resistance. He inspired millions across the world, inculcating in their hearts the spirit of freedom. The Man who wrote poems such as "Her eyes are Palestinian, Her name is Palestinian, Her dress and sorrow Palestinian, Her kerchief, her feet and body Palestinian, Her words and silence Palestinian, Her voice Palestinian, Her birth and her death Palestinian", died earlier this month in Houston, Texas at the age of 67. Sharjah Department of Culture and Information has envisaged a host of activities to pay tribute to the poet.
