The first phase of Mahabad Petrochemical Complex in West Azarbaijan province will become operational by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 21).
Announcing this, Ebadollah Akbari, the head of West Azarbaijan Industries, Mines and Trade Organization, said the project is being implemented over an area of 185 hectares alongside Mahanad-Orumieh Road.
"It is considered one of the largest industrial projects in northwestern Iran," Akbari was quoted as saying by IRNA.
The official said 7 trillion rials worth of investments have been made in the project, adding that the building construction and equipment installation parts of the projects are 95 percent and 70 percent complete respectively.
Akbari went on to say that related studies were launched in the year to March 2005, noting that executive operations of project have been started in the year to March 2011.
"The complex has the capacity to produce 300,000 tons of light and heavy polyethylene and 30,000 tons of butane-1 annually," he said.
The official noted that the inauguration of the project, which was launched under the Mehr-e Mandegar Plan, will play a very important role in the development of petrochemical sector, generation of jobs, optimization of gas consumption and expansion of exports in the province.
Deputy Oil minister Abdolhossein Bayat said in April that Iran earned $12 billion through petrochemical exports in the last Iranian year that ended on March 20.
"During the last Iranian year, despite certain problems, Iran exported 16 million tons of petrochemicals worth $12 billion, winning a significant share in Iran's non-oil exports," on Tuesday.
Bayat, who is also the managing director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC), added that extensive plans are underway to facilitate petrochemical exports in the current year.
