RIYADH: Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) has embarked on the implementation of King Abdullah Project for development of Waad Al-Shimal City for Mining Industries.
In this context, Maaden has awarded two contracts one for general engineering plan and infrastructure services for the city and the second for providing engineered designs and management services for the phosphate project.
The first contract was awarded to Bechtel Company, which will prepare the general engineering plan of the city including basic, downstream and support industries. It will also carry out plans for commercial, housing and educational facilities.
According to the contract, Bechtel will provide engineering services to Waad Al-Shimal City for Mining Industries on the footsteps of other major industrial cities such as Jubail, Yanbu and Ras Al-Khair.
The second contract was awarded to Jacobs Company, which will provide engineering designs and management services for the phosphate project.
Commenting on the deals, Maaden's President and CEO Khalid Mudaifer said the contracts were considered basic steps for the implementation of the city.
He said Maaden has formed specialized team works in coordination with relevant bodies such the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Saudi Electricity Company, Saudi Railways, Saudi Aramco, and Ports Authority so as to be strict to the approved time scales for implementation of the project and series.
He said the phosphate project would constitute a basic pillar for industries in Waad Al-Shimal City that will, hopefully, realize sustainable development in the northern part of the Kingdom.
Maaden plans to invest SR26 billion for the establishment of mega phosphate industry complex of which SR21 billion has been earmarked for setting up 7 projects in Waad Al-Shimal City for Mining Industries.
