New York, Nov 22nd, 2012 (WAM) -- The real fortune of the United Nations (UN) lies in investing human resources, and the reform in this area is a main pillar in its development, Third Secretary in the Kuwaiti permanent delegation to the UN Waleed Al Yagout, said on Wednesday.
He laid emphasis on the need to consider more balanced geographical representation when employing citizens of UN members, including Kuwait, in high positions, according to KUNA. A number of UN members, including Kuwait, repeatedly nominate nationals for posts within the UN, to no avail, Al-Yagout stressed. The Kuwaiti was representing the state at the 67th meeting of the Economic and Financial committee of the UN General Assembly. The UN should approve new procedures that increase the chances for approving employment requests from so far inadequately represented UN member countries, he added. This would come in harmony with the UN General Assembly's recommendation to giving priority to such countries upon employing new staff, he said. According to him there are "some" attempts in this regard, but very slow progress. He stressed Kuwait's support to human resources management reforms that started years ago within the international body, pointing out that the aim of such reforms is not decreasing expenses, but rather enhancing the capabilities of the UN staff and improving performance of its various bodies. The Kuwaiti diplomat supported the call of the UN's Secretary General for increasing therepresentation of non-represented countries, as well as the poorly represented ones, and the developing countries in the UN Secretariat. Al-Yagout praised UN staff, especially those working in tough conditions, risking their lives on the line of duty, stressing Kuwait's support to the reforms process aspired to by all member countries.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2012.
