Consumers to be 'classified'
KUWAIT CITY, May 16: The Cabinet will soon approve the proposed increase in the electricity and water tariffs, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting sources.
Sources revealed the Cabinet took the decision after the Ministry of Electricity and Water conducted a thorough study on the existing rates and the current energy production in the country. Sources explained the consumers will be classified into four groups and the rates will vary per group.
Sources said the first group includes the owners or tenants of residential, commercial and investment apartments with minimum consumption or lower, the second consists of those whose consumption exceeds the minimum but lower than 500 kilowatts, the third includes investment, commercial apartments, villas and houses with consumption of more than 500 kilowatts, and the fourth includes the commercial and investment complexes with extremely high consumption. Sources disclosed the increase will range from 20-50 percent, depending on the activities of the consumers. However, the factories will be given consideration so they will not to increase the prices of their products, sources added.
Meanwhile, Kuwaiti Cabinet held its weekly meeting Sunday at the Seif Palace under the headship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
Following the meeting, State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Ali Fahad Al-Rashed said that the Cabinet was briefed on the messages sent to His Highness the Amir from Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Head of the Supreme Council of Egypt's Armed Forces, Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Saudi Assistant Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General for Military Affairs Prime Khaled bin Sultan, and Greek Deputy Prime Minister Theodoros Pangalos.
