Iraqi Foreign minister announced that Kuwait and Iraq have agreed to upgrade bilateral diplomatic relations with opening an Iraqi mission in Kuwait, Kuwaiti official news agency reported yesterday.

Hoshyar Zebari was quoted by Kuna as saying "both countries have agreed on opening an Iraqi embassy in Kuwait".

However, he did not name the chosen ambassador. "The Kuwaiti Ambassador is ready to go to Iraq in the appropriate time," Kuwaiti official sources told Gulf News.

Currently, Kuwait has no diplomatic representation in Iraq, nor a representative office. Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations have improved after the fall of Saddam Hussain's regime in April 2003.

Meanwhile, First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Shaikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, is to fly today to the Turkish city of Istanbul to represent Kuwait in a two-day meeting of Iraq's neighbours.

He is to be accompanied by a high-ranking Kuwaiti delegation, Kuna said.

"Participants in the meeting are due to discuss Iraq's domestic security conditions in addition to security coordination among the participating countries," Kuna said.
