DUHOK - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has verbally agreed to provide up to 250 Megawatt electricity to Nineveh province daily.
The agreement was in response to a demand by Nineveh Governor Athil Nujaifi, said Nujaifi's spokesperson Qahtan Sami.
Sami said the province demands 900 MW daily.
He added Kurdistan will be reimbursed from Nineveh's provincial development fund.
The official said so far in practice no steps have been taken but after official agreement on the details the project will get started.
In Kurdistan the government provides up to 20 hours electricity for the citizens. The rest is provided by the local generators which operate in coordination with the government. This is unlike the Iraqi provinces where citizens are provided with state power for a duration between six to 12 hours.
Since last year Kurdistan has also been exporting electricity to Kirkuk. Kirkuk and Nineveh are both provinces whose tenure is disputed between Erbil and Baghdad governments.
