Dead Sea - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Sunday opened, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, the Dead Sea Crowne Plaza Hotel and Resort.

The $100-million hotel is owned by Social Security Corporation (SSC) and is a new addition to tourist services in the Dead Sea as it raises the number of hotel rooms in the area to about 2,200 rooms.

During a tour of the resort facilities, the King, accompanied by Crown Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah II, listened to a briefing by the hotel manager Firas Irsheidat, about job opportunities provided by the project and its role in the service of tourism in the Kingdom, especially conferences tourism.

Director of the SSC's investment fund, Henry Azzam, pointed out that the SSC's investment in the tourism sector is up to JD350 million including ownership in some hotels. He noted that the corporation's ownership in some hotels reach 100 percent such as the Crowne Plaza and the Dead Sea Holiday Inn.

Regional Director of the Intercontinental Hotels in Jordan and Palestine, Osama Massoud has said that the Intercontinental Hotels expertise spans over more than 50 years and actively contributed in supporting tourism in the Kingdom.

He noted that the global hotel chain operates 7 hotels in the Kingdom and provides about 2,500 jobs and accounts for about 50 percent of the hotel rooms on the level of five and four stars hotels.

The opening of the hotel on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea comes to keep pace with the growing demand for hotel services and the increasing numbers of tourists to the region, especially with the presence of the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center which is run by Hilton hotel chain.
