'Advantages Far Outweigh Disadvantages'

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 27

The Ministry of Education (MoE) will soon issue a decision which prohibits teachers from working in schools where their children are enrolled, says acting Undersecretary Maryam Al-Wateed.

Al-Wateed disclosed the decision is aimed at protecting teachers and the administrations of the schools due to allegations that the children of some school officials receive special treatment even if they are treated like other students. She said the Kuwait Teachers Association (KTA) had earlier issued a statement against the decision but the ministry has no intention to cancel it because the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

She affirmed the ministry studied all aspects of the issue before taking this step since it has noticed that most school directors transferred their children to the schools where they are working when the latter reached the 12th grade.

She asserted there is no intention to rescind the decision unless the ministry sees the need to revise it or clarify certain provisions. She added the number of teachers covered by the decision is very small, so it will not have a negative impact on the performance of the teachers and the students. She said the teachers will be given an option to enroll their children to the schools near their homes, provided they are not working in these schools.

KUWAIT CITY: Several academic experts have emphasized the need to implement educational development programs to raise the educational standards in the country, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. In a recent press statement, the experts cited some of the points raised by HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in his speech on the occasion of the last 10 days of Ramadan, particularly the significance of improving the educational sector for the country to achieve its development goals and to cope with the rapid changes in the international arena.

The experts pointed out the contents of the curricula are not far from the current situation of the country; the only problem is they are not suitable to the targeted age-group of students. They added the main objective should be for the students to fully grasp the lessons. They also suggested the inclusion of physical education subjects and other related disciplines in the curricula of universities. They said these curricula are not holy texts that cannot be amended; they should rather be revised regularly to be in line with the latest developments not only in the country but also in the international community.
