Islamabad Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on the leader of the election-winning Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif on Saturday.

Shahbaz Sharif, younger brother of the PML-N president and former chief minister of the Punjab, also attended the lengthy meeting held in the provincial capital, Lahore.

The army chief gave a detailed briefing to the incoming prime minister on national security and defence issues, sources said.

PML-N emerged as the majority party at the federal and Punjab levels in the May 11 general election and is set to form government at the Center and in the province.

Pakistan People’s Party secured majority in southern Sindh and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in northwestern Khyber Pakthunkhwa province.

In Balochistan, PML-N and Pakthunkhwa Mili Awami party emerged as leading parties in the provincial assembly and are due to form a coalition government in the southwestern province.

According to the constitution, the inaugural sessions of the new national assembly and the four provincial assemblies should be held within 21 days after the general election, that is by the beginning of June.

Caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso has said power shall be transferred to the new elected government without any delay.
