Karachi: Law enforcement agencies are likely to carry out a joint operation against criminals in this highly volatile city after the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gives his nod in a cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
Sources in the government said that the operation would be focused and selected and all the law enforcement agencies with the backing of intelligence agencies would carry out action against antisocial elements in different political parties, groups, and gangs.
Prime Minister Sharif will arrive here to preside over the cabinet meeting whereas several federal ministers were arriving already to participate in the meeting that would expected to come out with firm decisions to curb bloodshed in Karachi.
Some reports said that over 8,500 people have been killed in this largest city of Pakistan in past five years because of feud among extortionists, land grabbers, ethnic and sectarian groups whereas militant wings of the political groups also target opponents.
Extortion has become such an extreme phenomenon as the businessmen, traders, and highly paid professionals were migrating from the city for saver cities in the country and even emigrating if they would afford.
Karachi Traders Alliance, a representative body of the small and medium traders and markets claim that some 30,000 to 35,000 of their colleagues had migrated to the Punjab province.
Senior police officers on the condition of anonymity said that police and paramilitary rangers would jointly carry operation against the criminals indiscriminately. The law enforcement agencies, especially the police have acquired GSM locator that would greatly help them in laying hands on the hiding and escaping criminals.
In the absence of the technical equipment, the police was facing much difficulty in finding out the targeted criminals.
An intense national debate started last week after the Supreme Court of Pakistan was told that a huge cache of weapons were being smuggled into Karachi. The apex court expressed its concerns on the situation and reprimanded the law enforcement agencies over their sheer failure in maintain law and order situation in the city and protecting the lives of common people.
Dozens of men were killed during the apex court hearing that lasted for three days here last week.
