MUSCAT: Bid submitted by UAE-based construction firm Al Naboodah Construction turned out to be the lowest one for building a dual carriageway in Izz-Adam stretch of the 758km-long-Nizwa-Thumrait road project.
As many as 21 international and local groups have submitted bids for the 48-km-long stretch of the road project, which is part of a larger plan to dualise Nizwa-Thumrait-Salalah road.
The dualisation (double-lane on each side) work on the Thumrait-Salalah stretch of the sector is nearing completion, while the Nizwa-Muscat portion on the southern side is already a dual carriageway.
Al Naboodah's lowest bid was for RO49.99 million, while Galfar Engineering and Contracting, Larsen & Toubro, and Simplex Infrastructures stood second, third and fourth positions with bid prices of RO50.97 million, RO53.45 million and RO53.50 million, respectively.
The Tender Board opened the bids on May 23 and the project will be awarded soon, after taking into account various aspects, including the experience of the contracting firm in carrying out similar large-size projects.
The project aims at easing communication between the geographically-isolated areas by widening of a key road, which extends from capital Muscat through Nizwa, Thumrait and Salalah. This is also a major boon for those who travel between the Muscat and Salalah sector.
Apart from making the carriageway into four lanes from two lanes in Izz-Adam sector, the scope of work includes several cross roads, inter-changes and service roads, wherever it is necessary.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications is overseeing the project. Other bidders for the project include DSC Infrastructure, Khalid bin Ahmed Sons, Nagarjuna Construction Company, Sezai Turkes-Feyzi Akkaya Ltd, Desert Line Projects and Arabian Projects and Transport.
Asas Civil Construction was the highest bidder with its bid amount ruling as high as RO98.09 million.
Dualisation work on Thumrait-Salalah stretch of the Nizwa-Salalah sector is almost complete and nearing commissioning stage.
The $130 million-project of the 80-km Thumrait-Salalah carriageway was undertaken by Shanfari Trading and Contracting Company.
According to the Eighth Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) documents, RO250 million has been allocated for the Nizwa-Thumrait road.
This is part of an investment running into as high as RO1.23 billion for building various road projects during the five-year period in different parts of the country.
