AMMAN (Dow Jones)--Iraq's state-run Grain Board has bought 190,000 metric tons of rice for delivery in the next few weeks, a senior official at the board said Thursday.

The official told Dow Jones Newswires that the board bought 100,000 tons U.S. rice from ADM, 60,000 tons Pakistani rice from Iraqi company Durrat al-Nahrain, and 30,000 tons Pakistani rice from Jordanian company Jraisat.

The price of the U.S. rice was $699 a ton, he said, without giving the prices for the Pakistani rice.

He said that the deals were a result of the last tender for a nominal 60,000 tons that closed Dec. 7 with offers valid until Dec. 15.

Last time, the board bought rice was in November when it purchased 60,000 tons of U.S. rice from a company called Safe International and 30,000 tons of Thai rice from Iraqi company Al Mawrid.

The country consumes around 1.5 million tons of rice a year, according to trade ministry estimates.
