Tehran plays an 'active and effective' role in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), said Iran's OPEC governor.

"Since the beginning of the 10th government, the global economy has been faced with deep and serious crises. Iran, in cooperation with other OPEC members, after a careful study of the oil market and through making correct decisions has not allowed crude oil prices to drop under these circumstances," Mohammad Ali Khatibi told IRNA on Sunday.

Khatibi added that it was predicted that the oil prices would fall to $20 per barrel, but keeping the prices above $70 to $80 showed good management and Iran's effective role in the organization.

The official also commended Iran's effective role in the 159th meeting of the OPEC conference, which was held in the Austrian capital city of Vienna in early June.

In the session, Iran opposed the proposal to increase the organization's overall output ceiling in order to stabilize prices.

Iran officially took over the rotating presidency of OPEC for the first time in 36 years in January 2011.

OPEC is a permanent intergovernmental organization of 12 oil-exporting nations including Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
