An Iranian delegation headed by Agricultural Jihad Minister Mahmoud Hojjati will leave Tehran for Rome on Tuesday to attend the 32nd FAO Regional Conference for the Near East and North Africa (NERC 32).

One of the main goals of the Iranian delegation is to persuade European investors to invest in Iran's agricultural sector, IRNA reported.

Paving the way for development of agro export to Italy and outlining the capacities of Iran's agriculture to prospective European and Italian investors are among the objectives of the trip.

During the visit to Rome, Hojjati will express Iran's stance about expansion of cooperation with the regional countries.

The Iranian minister also will meet FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva and his counterparts on the sidelines of the conference. Hojjati is also scheduled to visit agricultural machinery, agro industries and food industries of Italy alongside seed production units. The upcoming conference, whose theme is "For a resilient and food-secure region," will be the first of a series of meetings to be held in 2014 in each of the organization's five operational regions. The agenda will also focus on the state of food and agriculture in the region and related issues like food losses and wastes along the production-to-consumption chain; enhancing gender equality; and, other approaches for improving agricultural and rural development prospects.

The regional conferences meet every two years, bringing together ministers of agriculture and high officials of member states from the same geographical region on challenges that transcend national borders and priority issues related to food and agriculture. NERC 32 will include a three-day meeting for senior officials from 24 to 26 February, followed by a ministerial meeting on 27 and 28 February.
