Steel production in Iran, inclusive of production by the private sector, will reach 15 million tons this year.

This was announced by the head of the Board of Directors of Iranian Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) Hassan Pelarak on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Addressing the staffers of IMIDRO, Pelarak said, "The current annual steel production capacity in the country is 20 million tons. Upon the implementation of Faraz plan within the next four years, 22 million tons will be added to the nationwide steel production capacity."

Furthermore, 400,000 tons will be added to production of aluminum and 400,000 tons will be added to the production of copper in the country.

The official said IMIDRO would make use of all facilities and capabilities for advancing the organization's goals in the current Iranian year (started March 21) which has been named the Year of Economic Jihad.

He noted his organization experienced success last year and managed to overcome various hurdles and difficulties effectively.

"Production units affiliated to IMIDRO last year had record production levels and this happened while we were witness to implementation of the Subsidy Reform Law in the industrial and mining sector. This year also, IMIDRO can play a fundamental and key role in fulfilling the goals of economic jihad. We will try to exploit the ongoing projects with full force," he said.

Pelarak said among important plans of IMIDRO for the present year is to cede justifiable projects to the private sector based on the governing laws and regulations.

Khuzestan Steel Company Growth
Meanwhile, Managing Director of Khuzestan Steel Company Abdolmajid Sharifi said on Sunday that last year his company experienced 18 percent growth rate in its production and for the first time produced over 3 million tons of steel ingots.

"This company, with production of over 3.024 million tons of ingot last year, managed to obtain the unparalleled growth of 18 percent in production and also ensure fulfillment of dividend on each share. As the first supplier of steel ingots, the company witnessed an increase of 460,000 tons in the Year of Double Endeavor, Double Work (last year) and accounted for 25 percent of steel production of IMIDRO," he added.

He cited coordinated efforts of the company's personnel for realization of its goals and growth in production proportionate to market demand along with adopting a strategy for reducing final price as the factors responsible for his company's success.

"In addition to the said parameters, improvement of market conditions in line with implementation of the Subsidy Reform Law created a situation for the company wherein 1,108 rials of profit was paid for each share last year compared to the initial estimate of 452 rials", he said.

Sharifi emphasized that in the Year of Economic Jihad his company would pursue its developmental activities in compliance with the directives of the leader and the economic policies of the government.

Mining Products
IMIDRO said the country's mining sector has witnessed a significant growth. The organization announced last March that sales and exports of various Iranian mining products increased by an average of 50 percent in the first eleven months of the last Iranian calendar year (March 21, 2010 - February 20, 2011) compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, IRNA reported.

In this time span, production of crude steel reached 11.555 million tons which marks an 18 percent increase compared to 9.753 million tons of the corresponding period of previous year.

Moreover, production of hot and cold steel sheets reached 15.362 million tons, marking a 75 percent hike compared to the respective period of last year.

Previously, facts and figures regarding mining products in 2009 pertained to companies affiliated to IMIDRO, but this year production report is linked to the entire country.

Cathode Copper
In the above-mentioned duration, production of cathode copper grew by 6 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year and amounted to over 204,000 tons. Meanwhile, the level of production of aluminum ingots and alumina powder reached 276,000 tons and 217,000 tons, respectively.

In the same period, production of processed iron ore transcended 24.320 million tons while the level of sale and export of steel, copper and aluminum grew between 14 percent and 41 percent compared to the corresponding period of the last year.

The local sale of steel and copper in the said time span reached 75,000 billion rials (about $7.5 billion) and 100 billion rials (about $10 million), respectively.
