TEHRAN: Minister of Industries and Mines Alireza Tahmasbi said here Monday that Iran is to implement new industrial projects in Syria, IRNA reported.

The minister made the remarks during a ceremony in which the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on expansion of economic cooperation. The ceremony was also attended by visiting Syrian Industries Minister Faud Isa Juni.

"The new projects are in various fields such as foodstuff, cellulose, chemicals, medical equipment, electricity, mines, machinery and textiles," he said.

"Implementation of the new projects can more than double the volume of economic cooperation between Iran and Syria," he added.

Pointing to talks held between officials of the two countries in the past two days to find ways of bolstering economic cooperation, Tahmasbi said the sides reached an agreement on establishment of a milk powder company in Syria by Iran and training of Syrian industrial managers.

He said the two sides also agreed to provide necessary incentives to encourage trade, particularly in customs procedures.

"The session had special importance given the region's current sensitive situation and showed the exceptional common interests of the two countries in the political and economic fields," the Iranian minister noted.
