Tehran - First Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi felicitated Saturday Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the country's Independence Day (September 1). In a message to the Uzbek premier, Rahimi congratulated the people and government of Uzbekistan on their national day hoping for further prosperity and progress of the country.
Rahimi also expressed hope that bilateral relations and cooperation would be further promoted between Tehran and Tashkent.
Uzbekistan was incorporated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century and in 1924 became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, known as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (Uzbek SSR). It has been an independent republic since December 1991.
