Baku, April 21, IRNA - Iran and Azerbaijan Republic held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Astara-Astara railway on Wednesday evening.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Iranian Communications and Information Technology Minister Mahmoud Vaezi and Minister of Economy and Industry of Azerbaijan Republic Shahin Mustafaov in Azerbaijan Republic's Astara city.

Baku and Tehran have decided to accelerate the construction of the Astara (Iran)-Astara (Azerbaijan) railway line, which would connect the railway networks of both countries.

The two countries have agreed to finance the construction of the railway line and connector as part of the North-South international transport corridor.

The length of the proposed railway is 10 kilometers. Some 8 kilometers will pass through Azerbaijani territory and two kilometers through Iranian territory.
