Move to ease traffic and create more parking space

Hoora is to have more one-way lanes by the year end. While roads 1805 and 1809 will flow in the Exhibition, Gudaibiya direction, road 1807 will flow in the reverse direction, said Tariq Taha Al Shaikh, member of the Manama Municipal Council.

The lanes or distribution roads in between will all flow in a single direction into these roads. He said the access would be from the Exhibition Road on one side and the supply roads on the inside. He said that the flow of roads when they are made one-way would ease traffic and also create more parking space. ''When traffic flows in one direction, it is easy to have the parking facilities on one side, while letting the flow to pass all over the road in one direction," he added.

The effect will be roads that are motorable, from the present state - roads in Hoora and Gudaibiya, which are far from motorable, Al Shaikh said.  He said that the roads were mostly ridden with potholes. Repairs have already begun in March, said Al Shaikh. The work being undertaken on these roads includes the laying of interlocks on Tarek bin Ziyad Road and Abdulrahman Al Dakhil road in Gudaibiya, near the Omar Khayyam Hotel, he said. The aim he said was to finish all the distribution roads by end 2008.

"Even if we are not able to complete it, at least about 80 per cent of the road work will be finished. He also said that the Council had approved the creation of more parking space on block 318. This in effect will mean a turnaround in the traffic density and parking availability, said Al Shaikh.
