BRASILIA - His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has congratulated the newly sworn-in president of the Latin American nation, Dilma Rousseff, on the occasion of her assumption of the top post.

HH the Amir's good wishes were conveyed by Yousef Ahmad Abdul-Samad, Kuwait's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the country, at a ceremony held in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, on Saturday, marking her election to serve in the top office. The ceremony, attended by Abdul-Samad, who was present as Representative of HH the Amir, also gathered a number of heads of states and governments, senior delegations, envoys, local governors and ranking officials.

Rousseff, 63, has just sworn in as the president of the Brazilian nation, succeeding Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has stepped down after two terms.

She had won presidential polls held in October, when she garnered 58 percent of the votes, defeating the opposition candidate, Jose Serra, and becoming Brazil's 36th president.

The veteran politician, who will serve for four years in the highest office of the governing hierarchy, is the first Brazilian woman to be elected as president.

Rousseff was appointed as Brazil's energy minister in Brazil's President Lula's government in 2003 and served as his chief of staff from 2005 to 2010.
