ABU DHABI, 7 May, 2013 (WAM) -- Mafraq Hospital, owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), has established its American Heart Association (AHA)-accredited Life Support Training Centre that provides training courses to hospital staff and members of the community.

Courses provided include Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Paediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support and Heartsaver First Aid training for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Heartsaver First Aid course was initiated last year. CPR and AED training is free and mandatory for all staff members at Mafraq Hospital, including those who work in administration. So far, 60% of non-medical employees and nearly all medical employees at the hospital have received certification for completing the course successfully.

According to Dr. Jehad Awad, Senior Regional Faculty, AHA Reviewer, Director of the Life Support Training Centre, Disaster Manager and Emergency Physician at Mafraq Hospital, "Heartsaver First Aid provides first responders with the necessary training on medical, injury and environmental emergencies that can mean the difference between life and death. These skills, along with the provided first aid kits and AEDs in the hospital, help to prevent serious harm. Sometimes it can take a few minutes for healthcare professionals to respond to an emergency, and every minute counts. Therefore having the necessary equipment on-hand and trained staff members provides added security for our customers and employees."Heartsaver First Aid training for non-healthcare professionals teaches essential skills required to initially respond and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest event until trained healthcare professionals can take over. Upon completion, the candidate is certified with an internationally recognised AHA provider card that is valid for two years.
