DOHA: The demolition of Doha's oldest area has begun to pave the way for the ambitious Heart of Doha project.
The phased-demolition covers the area between the Eid prayers yard opposite Souq Waqif and Share-e-Kahraba.
The area earmarked for demolition has great importance in Qatar's modern history as it houses the city's oldest shops and residencies, which were built in the middle of the last century.
Almost all companies that have grown to become the nation's pride originated in the wel-known streets of this area.
The authorities are keen to carry out the demolition and reconstruction with minimal disruption to normal life in the city. The necessary logistical support will be provided to the residents and owners of commercial outlets in the area to minimise disruptions to their lives.
As the demolition notices were served some three years ago, the residents and businesses got enough time for evacuation.
The demolition work was delayed several times to enable the residents to find a suitable alternative place.
