Kuwait - The 14th Annual Athletic Meet of Gulf Indian School was held at the KOC Stadium, Ahmadi recently. V.K. Mahajan, First Secretary (Inf and Edu), Indian Embassy was the Chief Guest and the function was graced by the Air India Manager Krishan C. Bhar, the heads of other schools in Kuwait, parents and well wishers. It was the much awaited day for the budding athletes of the school, full of enthusiasm, exuberance and will to win. The spectacular march past set the ball rolling for the day's events. Mahajan took the salute as the members of the four Houses Sathya, Seva, Jyothi and Santhi symbolizing Honesty, Service, Light and Peace respectively, marched to the drum beats in perfect unison. Conrad Baretto, the Sports Captain led the members in a solemn oath-taking ceremony. Hard work paid off the when Santhi House won the prize for the march past.
The Principal of GIS, Mrs S. Divakaran welcomed the august gathering and in her speech thanked everyone for their valuable presence. In his inaugural address, Mahajan lauded the efforts of GIS and remarked that sports activities are indeed an important part of the curriculum enhancing the physical fitness and mental development of students. Classes IV and V (Boys) enraptured the gathering with their free hand drill. The aerobics exercises by the students of classes IV and V (Girls) that followed, enthralled the spectators with its rhythmic and synchronized movements. Krishan C. Bhar, Manager, Air India presented the Air India Scholastic Award to S. Krithika for topping the CBSE Class X Board Examinations.
The tracks then came alive with races and relays as the spectators cheered the young sports aspirants to victory. Prizes were distributed to the victors by the distinguished guests and the members of the staff.
The individual champions of the various categories are:
Sub-Juniors: 1. Reshma Sindhu - V B (Girls); 2. Rohan Shaju John - V C (Boys).
Juniors: 1. Reema George - VII C (Girls); 2. Mohd. Hassan and Twinku Sanjay - VII A (Boys).
Seniors: 1. Priyada Murali and Soumya John - IX B (Girls); 2. Tushar Chandradev - IX A (Boys).
Super Seniors: 1. Mary Stephen - XI B (Girls); 2. Neeraj Rajan - XI B (Boys).
The most exciting moment was the announcement of the final results. Santhi House who scored the highest points was awarded the championship trophy and the House members celebrated their triumph with loud cheers while holding high their flag. The Meet was meticulously planned and organized by the Physical Education teachers Mrs Mariamma Santhosh and Vinod Arjunan.
