The semifinished Neyriz steel project in Fars province with a capacity of 800,000 tons will be completed in 36 months.

Mehdi Karbasian, deputy industries, mines and trade minister, said over $330 million will be invested for the implementation of the project, IRNA reported.

Speaking in a ceremony to sign the contract of the project, Karbasian said the deal was signed between Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) and companies affiliated to Ghadir Investment Company.

He noted that the contract to fund seven provincial steel projects was signed with a Chinese company.
"We have opened letters of credit for Sepiddasht (Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari province) and Qaenat (South Khorasan province) steel projects. Neyriz has the potential of increasing production capacity to 1 million tons of steel per year," he said.

The official said the project will have no problems in terms of supplying its own water, electricity, gas and means of transportation.

Karbasian added that construction of a reduction unit has progressed by 70 percent.

He said the two sides also signed a contract to establish a 500-megawatt power plant in the Persian Gulf Special Economic Zone.

Karbasian, who is also the head of IMIDRO's Board of Directors, signed the contract with Gholamreza Soleymani Amiri, the managing director of Ghadir Investment Company.

"The power plant will solve the power problem of Almahdi Aluminum Company and Hormozal Aluminum Company that are currently using only 70 percent of their capacity due to power shortage," he said.

It is stipulated in the contract that Ghadir Investment Company will establish the power plant and sell the generated electricity to IMIDRO.

According to the World Steel Association, Iran was the second leading steel producer in the Middle East in 2010 after Turkey.

Iran's main steel mills are located in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces.

The major raw steel producers of Iran are Mobarakeh Steel Mill, with approximately 47 percent of the market share, Khuzestan Steel Company with 23 percent, Isfahan Steel Mill with 20 percent and the Iran National Steel Industries Group with 10 percent of the market. Iran is among 15 major mineral-rich countries and exports its industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, India and Afghanistan.
