MUSCAT: Gulf International Pipe Industry (GIPI), Oman's sole manufacturer of high pressure Electric-Resistance Welded (ERW) carbon steel pipes, has successfully completed production of K55 casing pipes using ERW technology.
"These locally-made premium-grade tubular products will now be utilised in the Sultanate's oilfields, and we take pride as the very first mill to produce K55 casing, using ERW technology, in the whole Middle East and North African region," remarked GIPI chief executive Hamdan Al Shaqsy.
K55 are high-tensile casing pipes equivalent to X80 steel grade that is conventionally used in deep well applications and until now are being imported from foreign pipe producers. "To have high quality pipes 'Made in the Sultanate of Oman' indeed solidifies GIPI's position as a major player in the oil and gas pipe business," added Masoud Al Barwani, deputy chief executive and technical director, who lead the technical team that oversaw the K55 manufacturing, from design to production stages.
Korean-based Posco, the world's third largest steel maker, developed and supplied the K55 hot rolled products to GIPI.
Gulf International Pipe Industry, inaugurated in March 2010, manufactures line pipes, in addition to casing pipes, for the oil, gas, petrochemical, agricultural, construction and allied sectors.
GIPI integrated mill in Sohar boasts of a threading line, an anticorrosion external 3 LPE/PP/FBE and internal liquid epoxy pipe coating mill, slitting machine and a world-class metallurgical laboratory facility.
