Putting up speed-breakers may solve the problem
Doha - Worried over frequent accidents on Al Ain Street, the residents of the area are demanding authorities introduce immediate safety measures on the road that connects the busy Hassan bin Tabit Road with Abul Qadir Al Jazairy Street.
The local residents point out that an accident on Thursday, in which two people were critically injured, was the latest in a series of mishaps on Al Ain Street.
The Hassan bin Tabit Road and Al Ain Street are the two major roads that link with the C-Ring Road and D-Ring Road. The approximately one-kilometre Al Ain Street, which connects both these streets, has three intersections and all these junctions witness dozens of accidents every month, the residents complain.
The intersection where the Teyseer Service Station road joins is one of the most dangerous zones on the street. The junction witnesses at least a couple of accidents every week, they say.
Residents want the authorities to put up speed-breakers at critical points and make the street accident-free.
An Indian expatriate who stays at the junction says that the spot is noted for frequent accidents. "Believe it or not, every week not less than two accidents are occurring at this spot. Once, a vehicle, after colliding head on with another one, rammed my car which was parked at my garage. Though the permissible speed limit on the street is 50km per hour, the vehicles hardly follow the rule," he said.
Putting up speed-breakers at vantage points can control the speeding vehicles. "We don't know why the authorities are not keen on it even after repeated accidents in the area," he said.
Ahammed Abdulla Sadique, another resident, who is a national, told The Peninsula that it is high time the authorities introduced adequate safety precautions on the street. "Blood spills over the street every day. During nights, our children often wake up to the screechy vehicles. The roadside residents are the most worried lot", he said.
Its true that the street is too narrow for constructing a roundabout. But putting up a couple of speed-breakers can solve the problems, he said.
Abdulla Saduque said that that Abdul Qadir Al Jazairy road was once marked for its frequent road mishaps. But the entire street has been turned into an accident-free zone after the authorities put up two speed-breakers on the street, he added.
