KABUL, March 20 (KUNA) -- Four Afghan policemen were killed by Taliban insurgents in the troubled southern Afghanistan on Monday as the US military described existence of stinger missiles with Taliban or al-Qaeda as a threat to peace in Afghanistan and the region.

Spokesman for the coalition forces in Afghanistan James Yonts told a news conference if fall into the hands of terrorists, the stingers were a threat to military as well as civilian aircrafts.

He called the stingers a dangerous weapons and a threat to the peace of the region. The stinger missiles were supplied to Afghan mujahideen during the anti-Soviet war in Afghanistan which proved very successful in targeting helicopters and aircrafts.

After the ouster of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, the mujahideen dumped the missiles and it was feared that Taliban had got a number of those missiles after their occupation of Afghanistan. The US military has offered an amount as high as USD200,000 for a single stinger.

Meanwhile, four Afghan policemen were gunned down by Taliban in the lawless southern Helmand province of the country on Monday. Three constables and an officer were on routine petrol when they were attacked by hooded motorcyclists.

A senior police officer, who wished not to be named, said the four died on the spot while the assailants managed to escape the scene. Earlier, nine policemen were killed in a bomb attack in the Kandahar province.
