KUWAIT: Revellers marked Kuwait's National Day and Liberation Day yesterday on the Arabian Gulf Road by spraying foam and dressing up in Kuwait's colours. A hot-air balloon bearing a large portrait of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, a huge flag and the national emblem of Kuwait also lifted off near the Kuwait Towers.

Children made up the majority of the attendees. "This is mainly a celebration for the kids. They really enjoy it. We have been coming to this location to celebrate the National and Liberation Days with my kids for a few years now. When I was a child, my parents used to take me out for this celebration, and now I'm taking my children," said Fatma, a mother of two who was celebrating on the Gulf Road near Shuwaikh.

Police forces kept a watchful eye on the celebrations. "The Minister of Interior gave instructions to the police forces to let the people enjoy, but with limits. They must not violate laws and respect others. Using or carrying weapons is forbidden. Also, drivers should not cross from one street to another through the medians. Parents shouldn't let their kids walk in the street between cars or sit with half their bodies outside their cars. We want everybody to be happy on this great day as we remember our martyrs and those who made sacrifices for Kuwait," said Colonel Mohammed Al-Saber, a Ministry of Interior spokesman.
